Turkey’s first female violin maker, Nurgul Comak

NURGÜL COMAK
The tree has power and magic; and each one has a different story. Out of billions of trees, only the lucky ones continue their ways as violins. This elegant instrument, which takes its soul from its producer and its character from its performer, continues to fascinate with its sound.

I had been following Nurgül and her work with admiration since 2022. The dedication and tidiness she shows in her work was very apparent when I met her personally and tried some of her violins in İstanbul. I immediately fell in love with one of her violins, a 1715 Strad copy, and made the decision on the spot to buy it. It has a very beautiful, sweet, feminine sound with a lot of overtones, yet still powerful in the lower registers. I am proud to have it and hear its development it in my hands, next to my Guadagnini.

I had the opportunity to try and experience two different violins made by Nurgül Çomak, and to give a short performance with these instruments. As a violinist, both the technical capacity of an instrument and its musical character are of great importance to me. In both violins I tried, the first elements that drew my attention were their warm, balanced, and deep tonal quality, along with their strong projection.

In addition, the visual craftsmanship of the instruments reflects a highly refined and aesthetic approach.

This level of care and consistency in both aspects clearly demonstrates Nurgül Çomak’s dedication to her profession and her artistic vision.

As one of the pioneering professional female violin makers in Türkiye, I believe that Nurgül Çomak has made significant contributions to the development of the art of string instrument making in our country. Her continuous pursuit of research, learning, and refinement is evident not only in the instruments she creates, but also in the vision she brings to the future of this craft. I consider her an important and inspiring figure in the advancement of Turkish lutherie.

I had the opportunity to meet Nurgül Çomak a few years ago when I visited her workshop because of an issue with my violin. During this process, I not only had the chance to personally try the instruments she crafted, but also to closely experience their sound character as a listener in concerts and recordings by various artists.

The meticulous care, deep respect, and love that Nurgül Çomak brings to her work are directly reflected in the tone and character of her instruments. It is particularly remarkable that even her newly made instruments already possess a balanced tone, a mature character, warmth, and a strong artistic personality.

From the selection of materials to the smallest details of the making process, Nurgül Çomak approaches every stage with research, awareness, and exceptional dedication. She is a truly valuable and distinctive figure in the field of violin making in Türkiye.

I sincerely recommend that every violinist in search of an instrument take the opportunity to try her violins.
